Trevorâs heart felt as though it would fly out of his chest when he lifted his head and saw Lexiâs motionless form in the grass a few feet away.
He scrambled across the short distance to where she lay. With heavy amounts of fear and adrenaline rushing through his veins, he didnât even feel the bits of glass cutting into his palms and knees as he moved. Sheâs too still.
âLexi!â he shouted as he reached her. She was on her left side, her blond hair blanketed across her face. âAlexis, look at me!â
She moaned, the sound bringing with it a wave of relief. âBaby, I need you to look at me. I need to know youâre okay.â
Another moan escaped her throat just before her eyes flew open with a gasp. She sat straight up and began fighting him.
âLexi, stop! Itâs me...Trevor. Youâre okay, now. Heâs gone, and youâre safe.â
Her muscles froze as his words sank in. âH-heâs gone? Are you sure?â
Unfortunately, he was. Trevor had seen the bastard running out the back just as theyâd crashed through the glass.
âYeah, baby. Iâm sure.â
Her face crumbled. âThank God!â
Lexi threw herself in his arms and Trevor held on tightly. He could physically feel her fear as her entire body shook against his.
âI was s-so s-scared. I thought he w-was going to k-kill me.â
âI know, baby,â Trevor crooned as he rubbed her back. âIâm so sorry.â
âW-why?â She hiccupped as she pulled back, wiping her tears with her palms. âItâs not l-like you knew this w-would happen.â
Trevor shook his head. âStill. I could have had someone watching you while I was away. I could haveââ
âYou get away from her right this minute!â
A loud, shrill voice coming from the direction of the road had both their heads turning. A slender, silver-haired woman was barreling toward them wearing a light blue bathrobe that buttoned up the front and a matching pair of house slippers.
âAlexis?â The elderly womanâs eyes were wide, and she was clearly alarmed. âGood heavens, are you okay? What happened?â Without giving her a chance to answer, she turned her attention back on Trevor. With one fist raised, she yelled, âWhat have you done to my sweet Alexis? You get away from her right now, you hear? The police are on their way, and when they get here, theyâre going to arrest you!â
Trevor seriously thought the woman was going to try to wallop him, untilâ¦
âMrs. Siemens, no!â Lexi pushed against Trevorâs chest to stand. When he tried to stop her for fear she was injured, she quickly assured him she was fine and stood. âThis is Trevor,â she laid a hand on the old womanâs frail shoulder. âHeâs myâ¦â Clearly unsure what she should call him, Lexi hesitated, her eyes sliding back to his.
Trevor decided to help her out. Now standing beside her, he held his hand out to Mrs. Siemens. âIâm Lexiâs boyfriend, Mrs. Siemens. Trevor Matthews.â
âBoyfriend?â She sounded shocked, but shook his hand, anyway. âAlexis, you never told me about any boyfriend.â
âItâsâ¦new.â
As if sheâd just noticed her neighborâs busted door and window, Mrs.
